Play Airlines, an airline based in Iceland, ceased operations on September 29, 2025.

Please read the following Closure Advisory in its entirety to ensure you understand the instructions that apply to your circumstances. Airfare purchased directly from Play Airlines or through a travel agency/booking website located outside of Ontario is NOT eligible for reimbursement through the Compensation Fund.

Affected passengers should note the Compensation Fund does not reimburse consumers for the cost of replacement travel services purchased.

Ontario Travel Industry Compensation Fund (Compensation Fund)
Consumers who purchased their Play Airlines travel services from a registered Ontario travel agency or booking website:

Consumers who purchased Play Airlines travel services from an Ontario registered travel agency or booking website and did not receive their travel services due to the closure of the airline, may file a Compensation Fund claim for reimbursement.

Please note that there is a legislated six-month filing deadline for claims on the
Compensation Fund. The filing deadline is March 30, 2026.

Claims received by TICO after the filing deadline date will not be valid.

Filing a claim against the Compensation Fund:
Please be advised that the legislation requires claimants to explore all other possible options for reimbursement as part of the claims process. Please complete the following steps prior to filing a claim against the Compensation Fund. 

Should you not be able to obtain all the required supporting documentation to substantiate your claim in a timely manner, please submit your claim to TICO with as much supporting information as possible prior to the filing deadline on March 30, 2026. Additional documentation can be submitted when it is obtained to avoid missing the deadline.

  1. Credit cards:
  • All consumers who paid by credit card and were charged by Play Airlines should contact their credit card company to request a chargeback (refund). 
  • If your credit card company refuses to provide you with a refund, you will be required to obtain a letter from the credit card company stating that a credit refund will not be issued. 
  • The letter from the credit card company must be submitted with your claim against the Compensation Fund.
  • If you are unable to obtain a refund (chargeback) from your credit card company or obtain all the documentation required to substantiate your claim in a timely manner, please submit your claim form to TICO prior to the deadline date.
  • Any additional documentation that is required to complete the claim can be sent to TICO when it is obtained.
  1. Travel Insurance:
  • Consumers who have travel insurance must make a claim with their insurance company.
  • If the claim is refused, you must provide written proof of refusal of the claim.
  • If you are unable to obtain a reimbursement from your travel insurance company or obtain all the documentation required to substantiate your claim in a timely manner, please submit your claim form to TICO prior to the deadline date.
  • Any additional documentation that is required to complete the claim can be sent to TICO when it is obtained.
