October 13, 2023 - TICO Board approves 12 claims against the Ontario Travel Industry Compensation Fund
Mississauga, ONT. – On September 26, 2023, the Travel Industry Council of Ontario’s (TICO’s) Board of Directors approved 12 claims against the Ontario Travel Industry Compensation Fund totalling $28,753 to assist 16 consumers who did not receive the travel services for which they had paid.
The approved Ontario Travel Industry Compensation Fund claims are as follows:
- Active Journeys Inc.
1 claim to assist 1 consumer, totalling $900
- Crystal Cruises
2 claims to assist 3 consumers, totalling $7,803
- The 5700 Inc.
1 claim to assist 1 consumer, totalling $917
- The Travel Broker Group
3 claims to assist 3 consumers, totalling $5,000
- World Travel Inc.
5 claims to assist 8 consumers, totalling $14,133
In addition, the following claims were denied:
- Crystal Cruises
One claim was denied as it was received beyond the legislated filing deadline date.
- Interjet Airlines
Nine claims were denied as they were claiming for unredeemed credits issued by Interjet Airlines.
- World Travel Inc.
One claim was denied as it did not contain sufficient documentation in order to substantiate the claim.
The Ontario Travel Industry Compensation Fund is wholly-financed by the industry to protect consumers who do not receive the travel services for which they paid, due to the insolvency or bankruptcy of an Ontario-registered travel agent or travel wholesaler or due to the cessation of an end supplier airline or cruise line. The Fund only covers consumers who have booked through an Ontario-registered travel agent. The Fund is administered by the Travel Industry Council of Ontario, a not-for-profit corporation.
