On September 27, 2011, TICO’s Board of Directors approved payment of $10,250.33 to assist 11 consumers who did not receive the travel services for which they had paid. These payments were due to the closure of Panorama Travel & Tours Ltd o/a flycentraleurope.com in St. Catharines ($7,370.33); Sunrise International Travels in Toronto ($380.00) and Uniglobe Discover Travel in Kitchener ($2,500.00).

The Board also denied nine claims based on section 57(1) of Ontario Regulation 26/05, which states that the customer must have paid for the travel services to or through a registered Ontario travel agency. The claims were filed by consumers who had purchased their travel services from travel agencies located in the U.S.

The Ontario Travel Industry Compensation Fund is wholly-financed by the industry to protect consumers who do not receive the travel services for which they paid, due to the insolvency or bankruptcy of an Ontario-registered travel agent or travel wholesaler or due to the cessation of an end supplier airline or cruise line. The Fund only covers consumers who have booked through an Ontario-registered travel agent. The Fund is administered by the Travel Industry Council of Ontario, a not-for-profit corporation.
