On May 31, 2011, TICO’s Board of Directors approved payment of $49,472.39 to assist 48 consumers who did not receive the travel services for which they had paid. These payments were due to the closure of Affordablecruiseandtours.com in Hamilton ($11,887.00); Cosmopolitan Travel in Hamilton ($1,150.00); Cruise West in Seattle ($5,000.00); Elegant Cruises in Port Washington ($8,063.63) and Uniglobe Discover Travel in Kitchener ($23,371.76).
Additionally, under the trip completion provisions of Ontario Regulation 26/05, the Statutory Director has directed payment of $2,431.62 to assist 8 consumers affected by the closure of Conquest Vacations on April 15, 2009. These claims were in relation to consumers who incurred additional expenses in destination for transportation, accommodation and meals in order to complete their travel plans as a result of the closure.
The Ontario Travel Industry Compensation Fund is wholly-financed by the industry to protect consumers who do not receive the travel services for which they paid, due to the insolvency or bankruptcy of an Ontario-registered travel agent or travel wholesaler or due to the cessation of an end supplier airline or cruise line. The Fund only covers consumers who have booked through an Ontario-registered travel agent. The Fund is administered by the Travel Industry Council of Ontario, a not-for-profit corporation.
