Mar 31`11 - TICO Board Approves Compensation Fund Claims
On March 29, 2011, TICO’s Board of Directors approved payment of $57,600.52 to assist 23 consumers who did not receive the travel services for which they had paid. These payments were due to the closure of Affordablecruiseandtours.com in Hamilton ($4,176.06); Cosmopolitan Travel in Hamilton ($9,621.00); Cruise West in Seattle ($39,303.14) and Uniglobe Discover Travel in Kitchener ($4,500.32).
The Ontario Travel Industry Compensation Fund is wholly-financed by the industry to protect consumers who do not receive the travel services for which they paid, due to the insolvency or bankruptcy of an Ontario-registered travel agent or travel wholesaler or due to the cessation of an end supplier airline or cruise line. The Fund only covers consumers who have booked through an Ontario-registered travel agent. The Fund is administered by the Travel Industry Council of Ontario, a not-for-profit corporation.
