On January 25, 2011, TICO’s Board of Directors approved payment of $39,953.08 to assist 18 consumers who did not receive the travel services for which they had paid. These payments were due to the closure of Affordablecruiseandtours.com in Hamilton ($5,200.08); Cruise West in Seattle ($30,000.00); Jubilee Travels and Tours in Toronto ($1,120.00) and Sunrise International Travels in Toronto ($3,633.00).

Additionally, under the trip completion provisions of Ontario Regulation 26/05, the Statutory Director has directed payment of $541.04 to assist 2 consumers affected by the closure of Sunrise International Travels on December 18, 2009. These claims were in relation to consumers who incurred additional expenses in destination for transportation, accommodation and meals in order to complete their travel plans as a result of these two closures.

The Ontario Travel Industry Compensation Fund is wholly-financed by the industry to protect consumers who do not receive the travel services for which they paid, due to the insolvency or bankruptcy of an Ontario-registered travel agent or travel wholesaler or due to the cessation of an end supplier airline or cruise line. The Fund only covers consumers who have booked through an Ontario-registered travel agent. The Fund is administered by the Travel Industry Council of Ontario, a not-for-profit corporation.
